What Should I Do When My Tooth Aches?

woman with toothacheExperiencing pain is how your body tells you that something is not quite right. In many cases, dealing with pain can be as easy as taking an over the counter pain reliever. However, in some cases, the pain may persist and require professional treatment. Pain can be experienced anywhere, including your teeth. When you have a toothache, it can cause a significant amount of discomfort and can interfere with your daily life. If you are experiencing pain in your teeth, David Crumpton, DDS can help.

What Causes Tooth Pain?

There are several different issues that can cause your teeth to hurt.
•  Food or other debris stuck between your teeth.
•  Gum disease.
•  Cavities in your teeth.
•  Infections inside of your teeth.
•  Alignment issues with your teeth or your jaws.
•  Facial trauma.
•  TMJ disorder.
•  Sinus infections.

Clean and Examine Your Mouth

Sometimes, a toothache can be caused simply because there is something lodged between your teeth. When you notice tooth pain, thoroughly, but gently, brush and floss your teeth. Rinse your mouth with a salt water solution.
You should also take a close look at your mouth. There are several symptoms that can point to an oral health issue. Symptoms to look for include:
•  Tooth damage.
•  Red, swollen gum tissue.
•  Lingering pain or sensitivity.
•  A bad taste in your mouth that will not go away.
•  You have developed a fever.
•  You are having difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Make an Appointment

If nothing is removed when you brush and floss, or you notice symptoms of a larger issue, it is essential that you call our office immediately. We will get you scheduled as soon as possible. Meanwhile, there are things that you can do at home to help ease the pain. Take an over the counter pain reliever or use an ice pack on the side of your face near the area of pain.

When you come in for your appointment, we will perform a thorough exam. We check your teeth and your gums, looking for damage, decay, and other signs of infections. We may also take digital X-rays, which will help us to check for damage, abscesses, and other issues under the gum line. Once we have determined the cause of your toothache, we can then move forward to provide you with an effective treatment plan.

Treatments for Toothaches

The treatment that you receive for your toothache will depend upon the cause. Common treatments for toothaches include:
•  Fillings, which are used to treat cavities in your teeth.
•  Dental crowns, which restore damaged or more decayed teeth. Crowns are designed to restore the health and strength of the affected tooth.
•  Root canals. A root canal is a treatment for removing an infection from the interior of a tooth.
•  Tooth extractions, which are used in the event of impacted wisdom teeth or severely damaged, irreparable, teeth.
•  Orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic work may be needed in the event of crooked teeth or jaws.
•  Oral surgery. In extremely serious situations, or when no other treatments have proven effective, oral surgery may be needed.

When you are experiencing tooth pain, no matter how minor, it should never be ignored. While it may not be anything at all, it can also be indicative of something serious. For more information, and to schedule your appointment, call David Crumpton, DDS today at 817-678-7395.
